  • Spends season as backup

    Clifford completed one pass for 37 yards and had three carries for minus-2 yards over two appearances in the 2023 regular season.

    Analysis: Clifford spent his entire rookie season backing up Jordan Love, and he made brief appearances in both Weeks 1 and 17 and another in Green Bay's playoff opener. With Love perhaps receiving a lucrative extension over the offseason, Clifford is well-positioned to remain a cost-effective backup.

  • Completes first pass as pro

    Clifford completed the lone pass he threw for 37 yards in Sunday's 33-10 victory over the Vikings. He also had two carries for minus-2 yards.

    Analysis: Clifford entered Sunday's contest in place of Jordan Love with the Packers holding a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter, and he did make a mark in the box score with one long play and a couple kneeldowns. He remains the only quarterback on Green Bay's active roster other than Love.

  • Officially top backup

    Clifford has officially been named the Packers' top backup to Jordan Love, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

    Analysis: No surprise here, as Clifford has operated as Green Bay's primary backup all through training camp and the preseason thus far. He beat out Alex McGough for the opportunity to back up Jordan Love under center. The rookie fifth-round pick is second in passing yards (345) among all quarterbacks through two preseason games.

  • Stakes claim to backup job

    Clifford completed 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards in Friday's 36-19 preseason victory over the Bengals. He threw a touchdown pass, was intercepted twice and added two carries for 27 yards.

    Analysis: The interceptions -- one of which was returned for a touchdown -- were hardly ideal, but the fifth-round rookie otherwise impressed in his first appearance as a professional, displaying good accuracy and making plays with both his arm and his feet. Clifford is not pushing Jordan Love for the starting quarterback job by any means, but Friday's showing all but locks him in as Green Bay's backup quarterback to kick off the 2023 campaign.
